Growing Vocabulary for Student Achievement

How can educators make vocabulary grow in every classroom? First, start with the right ingredients. When we root vocabulary development in research, include vital nutrients, and nurture within a four-part framework, we harvest word learners. In this keynote, Brenda will share her ideas for growing vocabulary and include student and teacher classroom examples.

 

Teaching Vocabulary So Kids Will Beg for More!

In this workshop, Brenda demonstrates how to develop creative, flexible vocabulary instruction that improves students' word knowledge and confidence, enhances classroom community, and increases achievement. She will introduce how to introduce new words in context, expand word networks, enhance word-learning strategies, engage students in active learning, celebrate new words, and assess vocabulary development. Teachers of grades K-6, special education students, and English Learners will learn how to weave vocabulary into each school day using multisensory instruction that includes music, art, literature, movement, games, drama, writing, test-taking skills, and technology.

 

Creating Word Memories: Academic Vocabulary Development in Grades 5-9

Research shows that vocabulary development is key to comprehension and achievement in all disciplines, yet many young adolescents lack adequate academic vocabulary knowledge. How can we help middle grades students create word memories that connect vocabulary concepts? How can we organize for vocabulary development in the middle grades? In this hands-on, minds-on workshop, participants use music, art, drama, movement, games, and smartphone technology to explore vocabulary instruction and assessment that meets the developmental needs of students in grades 5-9.

Solving the Vocabulary Puzzle: 
Connecting Standards for Word Knowledge

References to vocabulary development are interwoven throughout the College and Career Readiness Standards in what might at first seem like jigsaw puzzle pieces. However, when we put the pieces together, they reveal a coherent picture. In this keynote, Brenda shares how to provide students with word knowledge and vocabulary strategies they need to succeed as readers, writers, speakers, listeners, and thinkers to successfully access text, communicate across the curriculum, and acquire the content knowledge needed for college and careers.

7 Keys to Comprehension in the ELA Standards
Comprehension processes as we traditionally know them are not included in the English Language Arts Standards. Yet all students are expected to comprehend complex texts at high levels. What are keys to comprehension in the standards? How can teachers combine reading strategies with standards-based literacy lessons for deeper comprehension? In this keynote, Brenda explains and demonstrates how teachers can create a literacy-focused classroom where students better own strategies for reading complex text.
