ABOUT BRENDA

​Brenda J. Overturf has been a leader in the classroom and in professional learning for over 35 years. Brenda was proud to be a classroom teacher at both the elementary and middle levels for two decades. She was then the K-12 district coordinator of Reading Curriculum and Assessment for Jefferson County Public Schools in Louisville, KY, before becoming the Literacy Specialist in Residence at the University of Louisville.
 
Brenda's keen sense of literacy issues across the United States and in many other countries was sharpened by her tenure on the 2009-2012 board of the International Reading Association, which afforded her an opportunity to meet and learn from excellent literacy educators across the world. She also served as the 2012-2015 co-chair of the International Literacy Association (formerly IRA) Common Core Standards committee. Brenda is past president and current board member of the Kentucky Reading Association, is a former site director of the Kentucky Reading Project, and was co-chair of the Kentucky Adolescent Literacy Task Force. She served as a partner in a U. S. Adolescent Striving Readers grant and was a member of the Literacy Preparation Advisory Committee for the state of Kentucky.
 
​Brenda holds an Ed.D. with a specialty in Literacy Education from the University of Louisville, and currently provides professional learning opportunities and assistance to schools, districts, and states.​ She has authored six teacher-centered books on literacy education, has written numerous articles, and has been featured in webinars for the International Reading Association, Pearson, and EdWeek. She is an author of Ready Reading and iReady, both from Curriculum Associates.
